You can write a book. Of that I have no doubt. For the most part you’re physically capable, you have a sufficient command of the English language (or some other language), your mind is functioning sufficiently to read this article—which means you have the basics of logical thought and maybe even a bit of imagination.
Yep, if you’re reading this article you have everything you need to write your book. Now, if you’ve got some physical challenges, there are either software programs or friends who can compensate for even those deficiencies.
You can write a book.
So what’s stopping you? Could be you don’t believe you can. Could be you don’t believe you have all the necessary criteria to make your goal a reality. Geez, I thought we took care of all that in the first paragraph. If you need to, go back to the beginning of this article and read it again until you come to the same conclusion as me at this point… you can write a book.
So what’s stopping you? Probably motivation. Or more specifically a lack of it. It stops all people from doing some things, some people from doing all things and just about everybody from writing a book.
How do you obtain that motivation? There are two essential ingredients:
Helping others, and habit.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re writing fiction or non-fiction, action thriller or autobiography, your book is going to help others. They’re going to obtain either pure entertainment or genuine insight, all because you’ve decided to make your book a reality. But if you don’t write your book, all those people will have to go without. They’ll have to live their lives without the contribution you could have made to making their lives better. That’s a huge motivating factor. You owe the creation of your book to yourself, sure, but more important you owe it to hundreds of thousands of people, many yet to be born, who could benefit from what you put down on paper.

I’m not kidding here. This isn’t just hyperbole. Books capture ideas, thoughts, concepts and more. Books change the world once they’re in the hands of readers. They make the future a reality. They change destinies and make the world a better place for you, me and everyone they touch—directly and indirectly.
Can you think of a more noble pursuit? Can you think of a more important reason to write your book? I can’t.
There there’s habit. You can’t write your book all in one go. It takes a bit longer than that. Every day you’re going to have to sit down in the same place, usually at the same time, and write a certain amount.
It has to become a habit. Habits are difficult to form, but once they’re in place, they always change your life.
Sit down at a desk, table, whatever, and devote 30 minutes, or 15 minutes or whatever you can comfortably commit to each day, and write as much as you can for that entire time period.
This isn’t a difficult habit to form. It isn’t painful, you won’t be suffering from withdrawal, and you’re not allowed to be critical. Just decide that you’re going to write for that amount of time every day. In a few weeks, a few months tops, you’ll have a workable manuscript. And you will have done something that will change the world, certainly your own world.
