Okay, the secret's out. And if it ever was a secret it isn't anymore. The biggest, cheapest and most powerful way to market your book is through word of mouth. In this article I'll give you the details that will make it happen for you.

First, your book can't be all things to all people. But it can, and should, be a very important element to very specific people. This is really the key to marketing your book effectively. You simply don't have the resources, time, money or skills to market to the entire book reading population of the world. Try doing that and you're headed for failure. But there are some ideas, marketing strategies, network time and time again for books. Here are some insights that could mean millions of dollars for you in additional book sales.

Who wants to read your book? That's a question that should be haunting new from the very first moment you start writing. Your writing your book for individual who displays particular characteristics. Perhaps they're romantics, or thrill seekers, or artists, or want to get a job. With the your book is fiction or nonfiction it will intrigue most of the together kind of reader. The more precisely and accurately you can identify is potential reader the more likely you are to have a big selling book.

As you write your book you should be looking for strategies that will put your book in front of those specific readers. If write a book about how to find water, what kind of reader really wants the book? That's right, someone who's thirsty. Someone who needs water for crops, or drinking water for a village, or, well, I'll let you do the mental gymnastics. If I write a book about saving relationships, it's a safe bet that I should be trying to find sources for relationships that are having trouble.

And it's the same for fiction as well. If I write a book that has art as a major influence, then art aficionados who like to read like to read is the market I should target.

These are the audiences that will be most receptive to the book I've just written. And that's where your marketing starts. Start making a list of magazines, columnists, reviewers, clubs, media programs, websites, organizations, associations. Wherever two or more people gather to talk about the subject of your book, you've got to reach out and touch them.

And you've got to touch them with sincere marketing messages that talk about your book, and specifically what it has to do with their interests. A lot of these people get bombarded with books all year long and the only way to make yours standout is to show them how closely your book and their interests mesh. Believe me, they're looking for a connection. Most of them will be out of fresh ideas, and are hoping that you really do have something of interest to their audience. If I've had a magazine going for a number of years on the topic of knitting, I've about e4xhasuted everything on that subject there is to talk about. So when you tell me a major theme in your new thriller is knitting, get ready to have me swoop down to grab the opportunity.

Okay, a lot of those audience members will be buying your book, but you've got to go from where you are, to the all important word-of-mouth factor. Ensure that you have discounted prices for members of groups. If your neighbourhood group of knitters buys 10 copies, you'll give them a 10% discount. Try to make the discount as attractive as you can, because the more copies you get into people's hands at this stage, the more likely you are to reach that one person who has hundreds of contacts that he'll tell about your book.

This is an important point. Word of mouth doesn't come from everyone. If you give or cheaply distribute 100 copies of your book to 100 people, each person will not promote and be responsible for the sale of five copies. In fact, statistically, only about two or three people will do you any good. But those two or three will be responsible for several hundred copies each, because those are the two or three who know people who are involved in 50 or more other neighbourhood knitting groups.

So, frankly, although it's never been done before, you should be coming up with promotional packages for people who want to tell a lot of other people about your book. Give them a letter they can send. Give them a discount, just for them, that can be their gift to the other neighbourhood knitting groups.

What you want to do is develop a string of very influential mouths (sorry about that visual) that will be promoting your book relentlessly and causing awareness to grow without significant cost to you.
