“The Ultimate Book-Writing Technology!
--An Expert's How to Write a Book Step-by-Step Guide”

Get ready for technology to make a giant impact on your writing career. And prepare yourself to start writing at least twice as quickly as you have been until now!
by Steve Manning

There are a lot of writers are there who write quickly. Some write as much as 5000 words per day. Or even 10,000 words. In the next few moments, I'll show you how you can equal that rate and surpasses it if that's what you want to do. It has to do with the use of technology. So get ready to become one of the fastest writers on the planet...

When I teach writers how to write, I usually spend a fair amount of time on the physical process of writing. I've come to the conclusion that writers use whatever strategy is comfortable for them. And what is comfortable for them is what they have been doing for some time. Quite a few writers in my class actually print. But they tell me the printing process matches the speed at which their brain works. "That's how fast I think," they tell me.

Others use cursive writing with a pen. And they, too, give me the same explanation. They write with a pen, because that's how fast they think. The words for their book, enter their head, ironically, at the same speed they write.

And to move it up still one more notch, those who use a keyboard, think at the speed that mirrors their typing ability. Apparently, those who use two fingers think decidedly slower than those who touch type.

For many years I was quite proud of how quickly I could type. Using all nine fingers (no one uses the left thumb) I could write at a rate of 40, 45, sometimes even 50 words per minute. But then again, that's how fast I thought.

I was always envious of those authors who could dictate to stenographers and write huge amounts every day. It seemed like the ultimate joy to be able to speak as quickly as you wanted to and write your book just that fast. Because after all, the way we talk is how fast we think.

That's not actually true, but until we can develop direct links between our brains and our writing instruments we'll have to settle for speaking as the fastest writing rate we can attain.

That's why I was so excited when I discovered a small piece of software tucked into my Microsoft Word application. It's a voice recognition software that allows you to dictate to the computer and have your words magically appear on the screen without the aid of pen or keyboard. Go to Tools. In the drop-down menu you'll see it as the word Speech.

Yes, I know, there have been many voice recognition software packages available over the last few years. But for some reason, call it inertia, I haven't worked with any of them.

Off I went to the store and purchased a microphone and in less time than it will take you to read this article, I was dictating my writing and was writing faster than even I thought was possible.

If you're hesitant about this kind of technology, I understand. We're all a bit reluctant to embrace the new and leave the old. Remember, I said we usually write in a manner that has become comfortable for us. I can tell you now that speaking your manuscript is not natural, and it takes more than a little getting used to. But if you're persistent, if you realize you'll get better every time we work with this strategy, in just a few days you'll be writing at least twice as fast as your current fastest rate.

And it gets even better. Because you're writing goes up from your imagination to your mouth and onto the screen, you really are emphasizing the strategy I tell writers about time after time: if you write the way you talk your writing will be much more interesting, understandable, and sellable.
