I have to admit, I love writing books and I love giving speeches. I love doing it so much, I’m even more than happy to give a speech for free. At first blush, that’s not economically a great idea if you want to learn how to write a book, but I always turn my speech into a video tape, a series of CDs as well as a book. And that happens for every speech I make. My gosh, if you got really cranked up, you could be writing a book every day, by giving a different speech every day. I’m going to show you how to do that right now.
But first I want to tell you that there’s a real psychological advantage to the practice of turning a speech into a book. It has to do with procrastination.
Without doubt the biggest thing that holds people back from writing a book is that they can never discipline themselves thoroughly enough to write every day. And unless you’re committed to writing every day, you’ll never have enough content to fill a book, fiction or non-fiction.
Writing a book is not like cleaning the kitchen, or preparing a meal or driving to the mall a buying shoes. With the exception of the method I’ll explain to you right now, writing a book is a process that will take places over several days, or even weeks. Perhaps months, in some cases.
Creating your book from a speech removes all those problems.
First, you commit yourself to making a speech. You’re going to deliver it on this date, at this time, at this place. No backing out because there’s all manner of social pressure that will ensure you keep this date with destiny.
Time for a little unabashed, self promotion: If you haven’t asked for my Free CD, “How to Write a Book On Anything in 14 Days Guaranteed!” then you’re just plain nuts! It’s free, no charge, but you can bet this $100 CD will be carrying that price tag very shortly. How do you get it? Just email me at Free CD, Please, or CD_please@writeabooknow.com and make sure you include your name, your mailing address and your telephone number in the email. Now, back to the article…
You know this subject, it’s your specialty. It’s what you do best, or what you do professionally, or what you do for a hobby so well that most people in the area can’t do it as well as you can.
So, you spend a few hours, or a day at most, preparing for the speech. You jot down what you want to say in point form. “Yep, I have to cover this item, and yes, I want to include that subject, and they’ll kill me if I don’t tell them how to do that task…” You get the idea.
Incredibly nervous, sure you’re going to make a fool of yourself, but ready to just close your eyes and just start, you’re introduced and you’re on.
But several days before that you’ve made some very important arrangements. You’ve got hold of a professional videographer to tape your entire presentation. That’s all, just that. Now before you start in on your speech, the tape is rolling and everything is going to be recorded.
Okay, you give your speech, you stumble, you bumble, you do everything wrong you possibly could on stage, but virtually everyone in the audience loves it and they appreciate all the great material you’ve brought to the group.
What’s more, the professional videographer actually had tape in the camera and caught every movement, every gesture, and most important, every word, you offered to the audience.
The tape goes on to DVD. Now you’ve got a DVD product. The DVD is used to create CDs of the presentation. Now you have a video product as well. Next, the CDs (copies of them, anyway) are handed over to someone who will transcribe the speech and put it on to paper, word for word.
Now you’ve got a book, as well.
How long you spoke will dictate how long your book is. It might be just a short book, or it may well be a great tomb (remember, that person will be transcribing the question and answer portion of your speech as well). You can go through it and add sections if you want to, or edit it if you want to. But don’t take material out.
With a little bit of tweaking, that speech you gave just became your first of many books. See how you can be giving a speech a day on different and creating a library of books with you as the author at the same time?
