There’s no reason why you can’t self-publish your book, and in the next few lessons I’ll be showing you the basics for doing just that.
In years gone by, there has been a stigma attached to self-published books.
They were often seen as “not as good as” those books published through traditional means.
Those views were largely held by traditional publishers who were often hoping to maintain a lock on the flow of new manuscripts to the population.
That’s just not the case any more. Many, many successful books are self published and there are some very good reasons authors are going that route.
To begin with, a successful self-published book gives the author a lot more revenue. With a traditional book, you’ll get 10% of the cover price as your royalty. With self-published books, you’re the publisher, so you’re getting 30% or more.
There’s also the time factor. A self-published book can be out there as soon as the printing press gears up to speed. With traditional books, that could be six to nine months, or sometimes more.
You have complete control over your self-published book. No one second guessing you, no one who must be placated to make the finished book a reality.
But there are two factors you should pay very close attention to. The first is that you’re paying for the cost of printing and distribution. You’re the publisher, remember. So all those invoices belong to you. That also means you’re in charge of distribution, making sure the books get on to the bookstore shelves. That’s not an easy task.
And the second factor? You’ve got to drive the publicity machine for your book. Again, not an easy task. You must be a very aggressive marketer to make it work. There are techniques for doing that as a self-publisher too, and we’ll explore them in the days ahead.
