“The Very Best Book Selling Tool!
--An Expert's How to Write a Book Step-by-Step Guide”

Here's the very best tool you'll ever find for selling more and more of your books. And the best thing of all is it works really well when you don't try to sell a lot!
by Steve Manning

Over the past 30 years, I have noticed that there is one overriding tactic for sales that not only works every time, but works relentlessly well. Individuals have used it, and major, multinational corporations have used it as well. And there's absolutely no reason why you can't use it effectively to sell your book. The tactic is a simple one, but oh so powerful Here it is…

Time and time again, I have seen the concept of scarcity send the sales of a book through the roof. And it's all because of a very real human behavior. We want what we cannot have. We want it desperately. We all want to find out about the product when there are only three left, or it is available only in limited quantities, or we have the chance of getting a limited edition. One of a kind, unique, special order, must be purchased by midnight, when they're gone, they're gone. And very often, we want it for no other reason than scarcity.

Unless your book is a major seller, like Harry Potter offerings, then you should be striving to make you or your book scarce.

I believe your book should have a sticker on the cover that says, "No more than six copies of this book will be available at this outlet at this time." Bookstores rarely order more than six copies of anything (unless we're back to Harry Potter). The reader looks at the copy in his hand and immediately checks the shelf. There is only one other copy there. "My gosh, four of the six have already been sold (actually the store ordered only two to begin with) I better purchase this one."

How about a sticker that says, "Limited Edition, only 6,000 copies of this edition have been printed. This edition will not be reprinted." Well, of course it won't. A new printing means a new edition. Or, "One of only 500 copies autographed by the author." Or, "Special bonus gift if ordered before the 15th of the month." You have different digital gifts available for the 15th of every month.

Yes, you can even become scarce yourself. You're the author who gives only one media interview a day. Now you're creating scarcity for the media. No one wants to talk to the wise man at the bottom of the mountain. He's too accessible. They want to talk to the wise man at the top of the mountain, who doesn't speak to many people, who is difficult do reach. If his availability is scarce, he must have something more important to say.

Somehow make your book scarce, make yourself scarce, make the benefits of buying your book scarce, make the bonuses scarce, if you've got an ebook you've just created, increase the price dramatically (300%) and limit the number of ebooks you have available this month.

If I can get something anytime, and there's no reason to act now, no urgency, then I'm not going to act at all. The default mode of all book buyers is to do nothing.

If you can make some variation of scarcity exist for your book, you'll sell more. Or even just the belief of that scarcity.

People love diamonds because they are scarce. But the truth is diamonds aren't scarce. They're as common as dirt. When a major diamond distribution company creates an artificial scarcity, that's good enough.

You can have several versions of your book, with one being offered for one month only, not to be seen again until the vault (Disney's term) is opened again, sometime in the future.

The scarcity for you or your book can be actual, created, suspected, implied, whatever you want. But for the book buyer it must always be real. Use scarcity when you sell your books and you can watch those sales soar to rare heights.
