“The Secret to Having All the Book-Writing Persistence You Need!
--An Expert's How to Write a Book Step-by-Step Guide”

Having a lack of bfook-writing commitment? Leaving your manuscript when you should be hard at work? Here's the problem, and the solution!
by Steve Manning

If you're having trouble writing your book, if you find yourself writing for only minimal amounts of time, or even worse, if you find yourself not writing at all for several days in a row then you have a pretty simple problem. Not only am I about to identify it for you, but I'm also going to give you the solution. And when it comes to writing your book, I can't think of a more useful technique to have it your disposal.

Back in 1978 there was a television program I particularly enjoyed. It was called 'Kaz', ran for just 22 episodes with the main character a convict turned a lawyer. I remember it because seemingly in every episode the protagonist would turn to someone and say "don't give up . That's the secret."

Of course that really helps when you write a book. That wasn't the first time I had heard that. Churchill's, "never, never, never, never surrender" meant the same. Even one of Aesop's fables concludes with "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. "

But it wasn't until recently that I discovered that the persistence you need to write a book has its basis fact. Studies are now being conducted and have concluded showing the more persistent one person is the more likely they are to succeed. And it's a strategy with amazing crossover potential. The person who is relentless in their pursuit of finishing crossword puzzles, for example, will be successful writing their book as well.

One study gave a group of students a lengthy questionnaire with mundane questions about their family. The questionnaire went on for more than 100 questions. Then came the marginally difficult math questions. Researchers discovered that they didn't have to look at the math test to know how well the person would do. All they had to do was look at how persistent the person was in filling out the questionnaire. The person who filled out 75% of the questionnaire would always achieve a mark of 75% on the math test. The corresponding level of persistence and math mark weren't just close. They were identical.

The reason? Your math ability improves if you spend the time to study the subject, and practice the questions. If you're a person who gives up easily on the other tasks in your life, you'll give up easily when it comes to math, too.

And so it is with the writing of your book. I can quickly tell if a person will write their manuscripts. It doesn't matter about their background, about their skill level, or about their commitment to the project. All I have to know is that they are persistent. If you don't give up when it comes to learning something creating something, building something, or seeing something through to the end, then your personality has wired you to be persistent when it comes to writing your book.

Writing a book can be challenging. It requires persistence. There will be many times when you want to stop. It will be easier to put down the pen or move away from the keyboard than to continue the writing process. And that's what happens to most people who start writing a book.

They're full of inspiration, desire, and commitment. But when the writing becomes a little challenging, when we have to think a bit more, we give up.

How do we solve the problem and become more persistent book writers? Start by becoming a more persistent person generally. Don't stop until the job is done. That means if you give yourself a task, say doing the dishes, or cleaning a room, or taking all the junk away for disposal, don't stop until it's finished.

Remember, this task and doesn't have to have anything to do with writing. All you're trying to do is increase your level of persistence. Increase your persistence in one area, and it carries over to success when you write your book.
