“Your Secret to Non-Stop Non-Fiction Book Ideas!
--An Expert's How to Write a Book Step-by-Step Guide”

Here's how to write a book and have a never-ending stream of non-fiction book ideas!
by Steve Manning

For one reason or another, a lot of people would rather write non-fiction than fiction. The idea of writing a novel, a made-up story just doesn't interest them. That's okay, because there are more than enough non-fiction ideas to go around.

There are so many, in fact, that no one, no matter how hard they tried, could even list them, let alone write them. You're about to discover a non-stop torrent of non-fiction ideas that will have you writing from dawn, until you pass out hours later, every day you pick up your pen or sit before your laptop. Allow me to introduce you to your world.

To begin with, there are two kinds of non-fiction: the non-fiction that presents that which is, and the non-fiction that seeks to solve a problem the reader is having. Neither have any bounds, but it's easier to grasp the first one… first.

You want to tell someone about what is, but they may know, understand or realize it. A chemistry text, history book, or description trees in a particular geographic area. If you enjoy the topic, chances are very good that, regardless of how obscure the topic, your joy, interest and enthusiasm will come through in the writing. And I'm not kidding. You can take a topic as broad as the universe, or as narrow as the lowly pencil, and produce a book that keeps readers riveted.

I once read an outstanding book (an award winner, by the way) about the creation, production, marketing and the virtues of a particular kind of screwdriver (the Robertson). It was mesmerizing and, believe it or not, a real page turner.

Often these kinds of non-fiction are about more than just the topic. They're about the people involved, their personalities, their foibles, idiosyncrasies. The steam engine isn't nearly as interesting as what the inventor (it wasn't James Watt) did with it and then how Watt became wealthy with a simple marketing strategy.

Take a look around the room you're in right now. Any item there has a book that needs to be written about it. Is it any wonder that there is simply no end to the number of non-fictions that can be written here? Next kind of non-fiction? The solution to a problem. I need to know how to build a picnic table, I need to know how to build a business, I need to know how to achieve my dreams, I need to know how to avoid disaster… and so it goes.

If you've got the solutions to these problems, if you've got the information I need tdo obtain my goals and ambitions, then I'm more than willing to pay for that information. Okay, you may think it's painfully obvious how to save money in a print show, you may think everyone knows how to speak before an audience, prepare a meal for 20, dress for success, find hope in a hopeless world, overcome fibromyalgia, or any one of a million other things… well, that's not the case. And if there are enough people who want the information you have, you can write your own ticket.

One recommendation, however. If you're going to write a non-fiction book, it should be about something you really enjoy, and have enjoyed for some time. It helps if most of the information is already floating around in your head and the amount of research you need to do can be kept to a minimum. I happen to be fascinated by biography, so I'm right in the middle of writing the story of Alfred Russell Wallace and Charles Darwin. Both voiced their discovery of the theory of natural section at the same time. Talk about a rollercoaster of who said what, first.

Now you may encounter a great non-fiction book about something you care nothing about. No problem. Take the strategy, the structure, the concept that is within this winning non-fiction book and bring it to your area of expertise, or passion. Works every time.

Maybe you like business. Okay, take two management leaders and see how they related to each other as they were working. Just like Wallace and Darwin, but on Wall Street.

If non-fiction is your love, hurry up. You have a finite amount of time left, and an infinite number of books to write. Let's get started!
