“I Just Checked, You Have No Book Writing Competition!
--An Expert's How to Write a Book Step-by-Step Guide”

Hurry up and write your book. At last glance there's no one as good as you are!

Hey, what's the point! Why should I write a book? Stephen King has the horror genre sewn up, the late Michael Crichton still commands the blockbuster bestseller, and what he doesn't, John Grisham does. Forget romance, Danielle Steele, and Norah Roberts have that in their pockets. As for children's works, will we ever get beyond J.K. Rowling? And you know that your non-fiction book has already been done to death, probably a lot better than you could ever do it. I get this a lot. Authors depressed about writing their book because they feel they can't compete, could never compete, with the literary stars already shining. So here is a box of reasons you should simply put that competition out of your mind and get on with writing your own book.

Because your own book will put you smack dab in the middle of the success you want. First… not everyone likes that author. Sure a lot of people do. That's verified by the number of books that are being sold. But not everyone. That's why publishers and agents are both always looking for the next name, the next author who can tell a story well and engage a reader. There isn't a popular or successful author out there who didn't start by wondering if there was any room left for him or her in the market. There's a huge amount of room, and a huge chunk of the market that is just waiting for what you have to offer.

Agents and publishers are aggressively looking for you (where have you been all these years) because they're not representing or publishing these big names. They want their own golden author. And if they have to look through a stack of query letters before they find yours, they'll do it.

The agents and publishes who are already working with the big names? They know you're out there. They don't know your name or have your telephone number yet, but they want it. They know that the next big star in the publishing world will appear shortly and if they've already got one as a client, they know how vital it is for them to have a second, third, and as many as they can find.

Next, frankly the market is far too large to be supplied with just a few authors. The market is immense and it needs more and more names, more and more authors, more and more books to supply the demand. That's where you come in. Right now you're working on one book. Publishers will take thousands of them to market this year. If you're good, their one complaint will be that you don't produce those manuscripts fast enough.

Whether you realize it or not you don't write like any other author. Your style may be close, but it won't be that close. And that change, subtle or substantial, is what makes you different from all the other writing competitors you may think you have. That difference makes you unique and is the main reason agents and publishers want to see what you have to offer.

By the way, if you've ever thought that agents and publishers don't want to deal with new authors, you can dump that mindset immediately. They're not just looking for you, they're scouring the countryside and looking under parked cars trying to get hold of you.

Finally, a quick look at non-fiction specifically. Okay, someone else has probably done a good job covering the topic you want to write about. But there is a line of philosophy that you should remember. "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." I can't tell you how often I've been in a situation where suddenly, a piece of common information has been presented to me and because of the timing, this information seemed miraculous.

Sure, this information may have been given to me many times before, but now was just the right time and the right situation, delivered by just the right author.

So, even if that book on sales training, or personal development has already been written by dozens, if not hundreds, of authors, the book you're about to write is every bit as important, and to many, many people, even more so.

As an author, you don't have any real competition for your book. Wouldn't it be a shame to delay taking advantage of that kid of wide-open market?
