   So many people ask me how to make money on the internet that I thought I’d devote at least one column to the topic. So, if you’re not interested in making money on the internet, I apologize and you can stop reading right now.

   However, if you’ve often wondered how it’s done, we’ll, here is the answer.

   You start by offering a product to a prospective customer and just about all forms of internet business are variations on that single theme. Everything you do, every action you take, every strategy you develop and every tactic you implement are all just designed to help you do all of that more effectively, more quickly and more profitably.

   Well, that’s the overall picture. Now let’s get to the nitty gritty.

   I’m going to suggest that you do several things and with one, several or all of them you could find yourself saying, “But I don’t know anything about that.”

   Well find out, ask, read, get someone out there to help you. Everyone starts out knowing nothing about the internet and slowly gains the information. Those who are succeeding are those who are finding out and using the information.

   Don’t tell me you’re too old, geographically challenged or racially disadvantaged. None of those things matter.

   First, decide what you’re going to sell. Could be a product, could be your own product, could be someone else’s product, could be simply what you do best. Could be an actual product—a set of dinner plates—could be a virtual product—an ebook—could be an ethereal product like advice or a service.

   Decide what you like to do. What you really like to do. What you do better that many (not all, just many) other people.

   Now you’ll need a domain name. They’re cheap. You can get them anywhere. Here’s a place to start, but it’s only one of thousands. www.olm.net.

   Next you’ll need a place to put your web page. That’s a company that’s a web ‘host’. Again, www.olm.net works for many but there are thousands of others out there.

   On the web page you’ll need a sales letter. That’s all, no fancy graphics or flashing lights. Just a simple sales letter. Perhaps I shouldn’t have said ‘simple’ sales letter. Effective sales letters are topic of thousands of hours of study.

   Your job is decidedly easier, however. Take a stroll through the internet and read some of those sales letters. Then make yours very similar.

   In that sales letter there will be two elements that might sound a bit complicated. But they really aren’t.

   The first is a name and email capture element. That’s where folks can fill in their name and their email so they can receive your newsletter.

   Companies like getresponse.com , aweber.com and 1shoppingcart.com among others can give you the code you need to pop into your web page and start collecting the names and emails of those who visit your site and want to subscribe to your newsletter or ezine.

   The second element? Well, you’ve got to take orders for the products or services you sell. You can’t make money on the internet unless you can take orders.

   For that you’ll need a ‘shopping cart’ service. These are the companies that take orders for you. And you’ll need to accept credit card purchases. That means a trip to your bank. Of course, there are always companies that will handle everything for you. They take the orders, process the credit cards, dump the money into your account, handle refunds and even ship the product (especially if we’re talking about ebooks or electronic products).

   While we’re on the topic of products for a few moments, please understand that the product that has the biggest profit margin is almost always the electronic ebook. Production costs nothing, distribution expense is the same as an email, and you can differentiate your product so that you simply have no competition at all.

   That’s the route I suggest most often to those who what to make money on the internet.

   The whole thing is rather straightforward with only one glaring challenge.

   If you’re going to make money on the internet, you’ve got to have traffic (people) coming to your site.

   This was the one challenge that hammered me for some time until a very astute internet marketer gave me the answer.

   Don’t try to get people to come to your site, it costs too much, takes too long and rarely works well for any length of time.

   Instead, go to where the traffic is, and stand in front of it!

   There are people who already have a lot of people coming to their site. Contact them and ask them if they want to do a joint venture with you. This is where the concept of affiliates comes in. To make money on the internet, you’ve got to realize that nobody knows about you. So go to those who already have the traffic and give them a portion of the profits (a big portion if necessary) to get some of that traffic coming your way.

   You don’t pay up front, you pay only for results. That’s how you make money on the internet. If the commission is large enough and the sales are frequent enough, all you have to do is tell those big sites about how much money others are making and they’ll beat a path to your virtual door way!

   You can also simply buy a lot of traffic by using tools such as Google adwords. But that’s a topic in and of itself.

   That’s how you make money on the internet. And if you’re not, the first place to look is that sales letter. It’s simply not as effective as it could be. Time to go over it with a fine-tooth comb and start making improvements.

   Of course, that’s just one way to make money on the internet. There are others. Many others. But this should be your basis. Your foundation. Make it happen here and you’ll have the secret to making money on the internet.
