“The Secret of Starting the Book-Writing Process Instantly!
--An Expert's How to Write a Book Step-by-Step Guide”

Redy, Set, Here's how you can get started when you begin writing your book, even if you're suffering from more than your share of literary inertia!
by Steve Manning

I want to start from where you are right now, sitting there, reading this, and get you writing your book as quickly as possible. To do that we've got to overcome what I've decided to call 'literary inertia.' For decades I've been telling writers around the world how to write their book, but just as important, perhaps more important, is discovering how to start. That's the objective of this article, we're going to create a strategy for starting the writing of your book…

If you consider a modern-day rocket ship, the logistics and the inertial physics are absolutely astounding. This behemoth weighs millions and millions of pounds, but the vast majority of that weight (more than 95%) is the fuel that will get the rocket ship and the fuel to its destination… and a huge proportion of that fuel is used just to get the rocket ship to move the first foot. Getting the rocket to move a foot 60 seconds later requires almost no fuel at all.

Getting things to start doing what you want them to do, even what they were designed to do, takes a tremendous amount of effort. Once they're doing it, it takes practically no effort at all.

This is the basis of inertia. Things like to keep on doing what they're already doing. Now let's apply this to George, the author. It requires a huge amount of effort to get George to begin his novel. Luckily, we're not talking about millions of pound of weight. We're talking about psychological inertia. Although that can be pretty heavy, too.

George would love to write a book, fiction or non-fiction, but just can't seem to start. The biggest problem that George had (at least until he read all my articles and got my writing system) was actually knowing what to do. Where do you start, how do you begin? There is built-in psychological inertia with that.

"Hey, I'd love to start a project I know nothing about, have never done before, can't think of what to do first, don't have any guidance, and could quite possibly screw up so badly it will return only grief to me."

If that wall of obstacles stood before me, I wouldn't want to start it either.

But George now knows that he's got to decide on fiction or non-fiction first. That's not exactly a big task. And then he's got to spend a little time creating the appropriate blue print for his book. He even has the information that shows him how to create an outline first, and then a blueprint for his book. By the yard it's hard, by the inch, it's a cinch.

And yet George is still not moving! Why? The task, for whatever reason, still seems daunting to him. Why? The reason really doesn't matter. Maybe George had a bad experience with outlines in school. Maybe Miss Mavis in grade 10 told him he couldn't write. Who cares. All I know is I've got to get him past his literary inertia.

   Here's how we start.

George now knows he's got to create an outline first. Then a blueprint. Those are the tasks. Now let's make those tasks so easy to do that they create virtually no challenge.

"George, you've got to create an outline and then a blueprint. But all I want you to do is to work on that project for five minutes. That's all jut five minutes. Not one second more. And certainly, not one second less. Can you give me just five minutes of committed effort, realizing all the benefits you'll receive when your book is complete?"

You know what the answer is as well as I do. Who couldn't give just five minutes? We spend that amount of time just putting gas in our car.

"When you've done your five minutes, George, you must stop… unless you really want tdo continue."

Repeat that process with George (or yourself) every day and within a week, or maybe on that first day, you'll have an outline complete and be ready to start the book writing process.
