True, you could write a mammoth bestseller and be financially happy for the next few years. But the chances of that happening are, well, have you been hit by lightening lately? A much better plan is to take a look at the best selling ways to make a lot of money as a writer and then capitalize on the ones that interest you most. So here they are. First… the strategy that has allowed me to make a better living as a writer than most doctors I know.
Write essential how-to information and make it available on the internet. You can do this incredibly quickly by writing a 50-plus page booklet, or writing a larger book. Put it in a pdf format, call it an ebook, write a ‘pitch page’ (Clickbank’s description, not mine) and you, too can be selling your writing even while you sleep.
Once you’ve done that, grow that ebook into something that is much larger so you’ll be able to pack it with still more information and make it available as a real paper and ink product. Read a few of the most important chapters and you’ve got a collection of CDs to include with the manual.
Deliver a free talk to a group of enthusiastic friends or colleagues, make sure it’s taped by a local service (don’t cheap out on the quality of video recording) and you’ve got a DVD to add to a package and you’re selling the material you've written for $300 to $2000 each.
Your success here is dependent on just one thing: make sure the information is packed with value. You’re not trying to pull a fast one on anyone here. Just give your potential customers as much value as you possibly can.
From here, you can go on to become a professional speaker or a consultant. If it’s something that people need to know, and if you know more than half of the population out there, you can quite literally write your own ticket.

Okay, let’s change gears. The second most profitable way to make money as a writer is to be a professional copywriter. That means writing sales letter copy, or ad copy, or other marketing material copy for corporations or large organizations.
Now, it takes a while to become proficient at this skill, but there are quite a few books, courses and manuals that will give you all the insights you need. The most important quality is to have an open mind, because the kind of writing that gets someone to make a donation, or buy a membership, or purchase a product is a lot different from the writing you’ll see just about anywhere else. But it can be done. Start at your local library and then track down the items in the bibliographies.
Once you know how it’s done, here’s the fastest way in the world to get clients. (Hey, this secret alone is worth thousands of dollars!) Offer your services to corporate marketing managers absolutely free for one project. If they want to, they can give you the same assignment they’ve just given to their regular copywriter. It doesn’t cost them anything, so they can compare. If you’re good, you’ve just got your first client.
Your fee for copywriting? Here’s another huge secret. Think of the largest number you could possible charge for that writing project. Now double it. That’s your fee. Now, go practice saying it in the mirror. When you can do it with a straight face, you’re ready to tell your client.
Oh, by the way. It’s a two-part fee. The money, of course, as well as two letters of referral to marketing people the client knows. No exceptions. That’s part of the fee, honest. When you get really good, you’ll be charging a fee, plus a percentage of the gross sales of the project. No, I’m not kidding!
