--An Expert's How to Write a Book Step-by-Step Guide”

Need some practice for your writing expertise? Here it is, and it's non-stop!
by Steve Manning

Writers write. Never have I written a more succinct, more instructive, or more helpful sentence. I have every confidence that you're a good writer now. I can prove that, however that's another article. What I want you to realize now is that to become an even better writer, you've got to write, and I've just developed a simple exercise that will let you start your day, and every day, with writing success.

If you're a teacher, trying to get a never-ending supply of writing topics for your students, here it is. If you're a professional writer, or want to be, this strategy will serve as warm up, practice, and training. You might also see a quick way to create a scene in your book instantly. Here it is…

Now, I know you may want to write non-fiction. I understand that. I'm a little partial to that writing sector myself. But that doesn't mean you can't improve your writing, and this strategy makes it possible. Not only that, but just about all the work is done for you. All you've got to do is unleash your writing ability and watch your writing techniques improve.

There's a web site on the internet called flickr.com. Watch the spelling of that. There's no 'e'. People travel all over the world, and some no farther than their front yard, and take pictures of what they see. Some of the pictures are quite astounding. Some less so. But several thousand are uploaded to the website every minute, so there's absolutely no shortage of pictures.

With this website, you're free to browse the pictures at random, or if there's a specific subject you'd like to see, then just pop the term into the search box and hit return. You can get anywhere from a handful to several thousand pictures of that same subject.

With such a wealth of pictures, you just know I'm going to find a way of turning it into a writing buffet So here's the strategy. Pick a topic, any topic, any subject. I've found the more mundane the topic, the better the selection and the better this whole thing works.

Now consider these questions as you look at your chosen picture.

What has just happened? What is about to happen? Describe the saddest thing that has ever happened here. Describe the happiest thing that has ever happened here. Something just happened here involving three children, (or a horse, or a chicken, or a Porsche). Tell me about it.

Next step, what three words best describe the answer to the question you've just picked. Please note that I don't want you to provide a three word answer. Just the three words that best describe the answer. The words will probably be random, such as 'blue, ice cream and paint.' Start your writing with one of those three words (those of you who already have my system already know where we're headed with this concept. And you know the results are incredibly powerful. The other two words must appear in the first paragraph. Now write as fast as you can.

Using this technology you can actually plot out a huge number of scenes in novel and make the creation of your book go even faster! If you're a teacher, it should take your students all of about 20 seconds before they're writing at a frantic pace. If you're a writer (or want to be) this is all the warm-up exercise you need before you're back into your book and are half way through your next chapter before you know it.

If a picture is worth 1,000 words, then how do you handle a situation where you have 4,000 pictures a minute coming in?
