“Secrets of Choosing the Right Book Printer for You!
--An Expert's Step-by-Step Guide”

“How to Choose The Right Printer!”

If you’re going to self-publish your book, you’ll have to choose a book printer who can do the job for you. And not all book printers are created equally. Some are good, some are more challenged, and some are, well, some just shouldn’t be in the business at all.

And pricing seems to be all over the lot. That’s largely because book printing is half straightforward mechanical procedure and half art. It’s also because book printers seem to do their best at not allowing you to compare apples with apples. Not on purpose, of course. It just happens that way.

Most book printers who cater to the entrepreneurial sector, know that those folks have a lot on their mind, a lot of work to do in other areas, and very often need services that go above and beyond the simple printing of the book. There’s putting the book manuscript onto an electronic file, editing, layout, cover art and design, ISBN and Library of Congress cataloguing, financing, storage, marketing, distribution, promotion and publicity and half a dozen other items that need to be taken care of for a successful self-published book.

Frankly, the book printer you approach would be remiss if they didn’t make sure you had all those bases covered… if not with them, then with someone else. Some book printers are complete one-stop shops, while others simply do what they’re good at and recommend the services of other professionals for the services they don’t offer.

That’s why it’s often difficult to compare.

So, back to the main question: how do you choose a good book printer? Contact several… not just one. Find out what they offer and ask yourself why you would want to work with them. Remember, talk with several. Not just one.

Ask for the contacts of authors they’ve worked with. And then follow up and talk with those authors. How did the book printer succeed for them, and where did they fall short? On the topic of good comparisons, try to make sure the authors you speak with have books similar to yours. (Not the topic, but the physical size, shape and number of pages, as well as size of print run and both pre and post printing services used) Book printers should be able to give you list of satisfied customers.
