Ask any writer what their formula is for book writing success and they'll give yo their best guess. Chances are excellent they really haven't given it much thought. Some do lots of research first. Others take a look at where their reading left off and go on from there. Still others will tell you about plot outlines while the more esoteric will say it's a cosmic thing with the muse weighing heavily on their shoulder.
Their might even be a few brave souls who will say they have no preparation at all. They jus sit down before the keyboard and start at the beginning and keep going until they reach the end, and then they stop.
Know what you're going to write about. If it's fiction it will be the kind of book you have a passion for reading, and that you know in your heart you can create. Don't start in a genre you know only fleetingly, and don't be intimidated by what has already been written in the area you want to specialize in.
If you want to write non-fiction, have that same kind of passion for providing information that will greatly benefit others, or at the very least entertain them. And get ready to have a unique angle for your book so you can say to anyone who asks, agent, editor or reader, that your book is very different and they'd be crazy to give your book a miss by not purchasing it.

Create an extensive outline for the book. I'm convinced that people don't write their book because, although they start with the best of intentions, the sincerely have no idea of what to write next. Your outline should be more than just a collection of ideas for chapter headings. It should be a detailed structure that will tell you precisely what will be, what you will describe, how you'll move he story along, what information you'll convey, on each page. That's the only way to guarantee that you'll never again suffer from writer's block, or any other delaying tactic you might encounter.
And the time you spend on that detailed outline will be more than paid back when it comes time to write your book.
Commit to writing a specific amount each day. Writing a book is a task that is always best accomplished in small bits are embraced each and every day. Be accountable to at least one person or more. Don't hide your light under a bushel. Tell people you're writing a book. Tell them you're going to show them how much you've written each week. Have or create the motivation you need to maintain your schedule and write your book . Make a list of all the reasons you have or can think of that justify, rationalize, and demand the writing of your book. Make them real. Make them vivid.
